Aircraft modeling has undergone
significant changes over the decades - both in technology and preferences. Magazines like
American
Aircraft Modeler, and
American Modeler before that, were the best venues for capturing
snapshots of the status quo of the day. Still, many things never change, so much of the old content
is relevant to today's modeler.
Whether you are here to wax nostalgic, or are just interested
in learning history, hopefully you will find what you are seeking. As time permits, I will be glad
to scan articles for you. All copyrights (if any) are hereby acknowledged.
These pages were scanned from the March 1969 edition of American Aircraft Modeler. It is hard to imagine a time when we did not have all the ready-to-fly, high performance radio controlled helicopters like we have today. Teams of design engineers now create the 3D-out-of-the-box machines and sell them with a radio system installed for less than just the price of a 4-channel proportional R/C system of the 1960s/1970s. The ingenuity of the pioneers is apparent in these photos
(click for larger versions).
This edition of
Model World... on the International Scene reported on Germany's first R/C model helicopter contest.
